Wipe Away Those Germs

In Disinfecting on November 2, 2012 by Stone Care Experts Tagged: , , ,

Up to 20 percent of the U.S. population gets sick from the flu every year, and nearly 200,000 need hospital treatment from the illness.  The flu bug is most often passed from person to person, according to the CDC, and less often from touching a surface that has the flu virus on it.  To fight against the chance of getting the flu, many of us will stock our medicine cabinets, increase our healthy eating routines, choose to get a vaccine, and use disinfectants on surfaces where the flu virus can wait.

At our homes, we do most of the above – we get a little wimpy about the needles, so it’s a hit or miss some years – for our families.  But when it comes to disinfectants, we drew the line.  They’re great at doing what they’re supposed to do, but as you might expect from being in the stone industry all our lives, we have quite a lot of stone surfaces in our homes.  Typical disinfectants, you see, actually damage natural stone and that eventually leads to the high cost of repairing or replacing the surfaces.

Family and health come first, of course, so we spent some time tinkering and came up with a disinfectant that first kills the flu bug and other contagious viruses and then won’t damage natural stone.  We chose to develop the disinfectant in convenient wipes, feeling most people like us are looking for something that’s both effective and easily accessible under sinks, linen closets or cleaning cabinets.  In addition to being approved by the EPA for use on sealed stone surfaces, the wipes can be used on counter tops, sinks, faucets, exterior surfaces of appliances, bathtubs, toilets and showers. They can also be used on doorknobs, glazed tiled floors and children’s toys.

Timing is everything, and with the coming cold and flu season – CDC says it’s usually late November through March, but our homes and offices have already heard too many coughs, sniffles and sneezes already – we’re giving away full-size samples throughout November.  All we ask you to do is go to our Facebook page and share your advice and tips on keeping the cold and flu bugs away.  We’re also conducting various promotions for chances to receive other Granite Gold stone-care products.  Winners will be selected at random each day.

Lastly, we always want to share quick tips on stone care you can do at home:

Most people don’t realize a disinfectant needs to sit on a surface for at least five minutes for it to properly take effect.  Also, disinfectants aren’t meant for cleaning and will leave streaks on stone surfaces.  After letting the disinfectant dry, rinse with potable water and then clean.  Don’t use our polish on your stone until you rinse and clean the disinfected area; otherwise, streaking will occur.
